CPAP machine stands for Continuous positive airway pressure machine, and is mainly used to treat sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a condition caused by the obstruction in the airways. What happens is that when a person is asleep, the airways become narrow, causing difficulty in breathing or even pauses in breathing. The person experiencing sleep apnea usually isn't even aware about it happening, even upon waking up, and will only experience some of the symptoms throughout the day such as extreme fatigue and sleepiness. Serious cases of sleep apnea can lead to various conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity, and clinical depression.
A CPAP machine is typically used for treatment of people at home. The machine comprises of different components namely the mask, pillow, and the machine itself. What happens when you use a CPAP machine is that it aids the individual to have unobstructed breathing throughout the night. It produces a stream of compressed air that goes through a hose and into the nasal pillow or face mask, making way for more air and which prevents the difficulty in breathing. The CPAP machine effectively reduces or even prevents sleep apnea and loud snoring, which almost always accompanies the condition.
However, if you want to have a CPAP machine at home, you still have to consult with your physician first because there are technicalities which have to be determined first. For instance, the CPAP machine should release a prescribed pressure which is specified by physician after conducting a sleep study in a laboratory. Most of the time, patients experience immediate improvement with their sleep after only 1 night using a CPAP machine. However, sleep apnea is a condition that doesn't go away so for those who think that it can completely eliminate apnea, the best way to manage the condition is to have an ongoing CPAP therapy coupled with a continuous chronic care management.
